The only writing I can find on the gun is on the top of the barrel ( made by Remington under Browning patents, and it lists the patent numbers. They added 12- and 16-gauge "The Sportsman" in 1931, with 12-gauge "The Sportsman" having serial numbers starting at 500,000 and 16-gauges having serial numbers starting at 200,000.

In a failed attempt to decode and date a S/N# A1830 on an older Browning A5 semi-auto 16ga. I contacted Browning and inquired about the A5, and they said it was most likely a Remington Model 11. They said the serial number was on the left side of the receiver. shotgun completely refinished by a very competent gunsmith following my Dad's death. I know the gunsmith would not have erased any serial number as it is illegal, and the gunsmith was a state trooper. In 1931, they added the 16-gauge to the line with 16-gauge serial numbers starting at 1,500,000.

A few reasons cited are: There is probably some kernel of truth to all of them.

But the fact remains; there is no original, single, totally accurate database of serial numbers from 1866 forward that we are aware of.
